Introduction: Chronic pain is a prevalent and debilitating condition affecting a significant portion of the population. Emerging evidence suggests a potential link between Vitamin D deficiency and chronic pain. This study aims to explore the association between Vitamin D deficiency and various chronic pain conditions in a single-center, retrospective study.
Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at Daradia pain hospital, reviewing medical records of patients diagnosed with chronic pain conditions from 2021-2023 after receiving the approval from the ethical committee. Levels of Serum Vitamin D , age, gender recorded in patient files were recorded. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as levels below 20 ng/mL. Statistical analyses were performed to determine the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency in each chronic pain condition and to explore potential associations.
Results: A total of 500 patients were included in the study. 78 patients(16%) were diagnosed as Osteoarthritis,124 patients as Fibromyalgia(25%),212 patients as Spondyloarthropathy(42%), 42 cases as Low back pain (9%), 12 cases of fracture(2%), rest 32 cases(6%) was categorised as others..Among 212 patients diagnosed as spondyloarthropathy 180 patients (89.90%) had Vitamin D deficiency, 98 patients out of 124 patients(79.03%) diagnosed as Fibromyalgia were having Vit D deficiency.
Conclusion: The findings of this retrospective study suggest a significant association between Vitamin D deficiency and specific chronic pain conditions. These results underscore the importance of evaluating and addressing Vitamin D levels in patients with chronic pain, which may potentially improve pain management and overall quality of life.
